BrainMix Team Secures Research Grant to Advance Clinically Relevant Disease Models

The BrainMix team has secured a research grant from the North Staffordshire Medical Institute (NSMI) to further develop the BrainMix platform and demonstrate its potential for creating advanced models of neurological disease.

Working alongside project collaborators Mr Nikolaos Tzerakis, Consultant Neurosurgeon at University Hospitals of North Midlands, and Professor Melissa Bowerman, Professor of Neuromuscular & Skeletal Disorders at Keele University, the funding will support the application of BrainMix in modelling brain injury and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)  two conditions where there is an urgent need for improved therapies.

The grant will help generate further validation data, showcasing how BrainMix can provide a more biologically relevant and scalable alternative to traditional research models.

Professor Murray Brunt, Chair of the NSMI, said

“We are delighted to support this research on BrainMix as it contributes to our mission to improve health outcomes for patients. We will be following this exciting neurological project closely, particularly given the potential to generate a spinout company which could contribute to the local Staffordshire economy, attract investment and support the jobs market.”

This latest funding milestone represents another step forward in translating BrainMix from academic innovation into real-world impact.
